She Raised $200K in Grants, Read Her Best Money Tips

Recently, in a live-streamed event on Inc.com, MOODEAUX founder and CEO Brianna Arps spilled the tea on what it takes to fundraise alongside the brilliant Aisha Bowe, CEO of Inc. 5000 engineering firm STEMBoard.

Here are a few of the most impactful takeaways from their chat on pitching and sealing the deal!

1. Choose Wisely: When it comes to picking your financial partners, Brianna advises caution. Don't just rush into anything — ask a lot of questions, dig deep and suss out mutual connections. She even suggests calling up other founders in their portfolio for the inside scoop. It's like investigative journalism but for your business.

2. Guard Your Secrets: No matter how charming an investor seems, safeguard your pitch deck like your business depends on it...because it does! Brianna uses document sharing and tracking software to help keep her info under lock and key. Plus, she adds a personal touch to each deck with details stating who should be viewing and when, so there's no room for confusion.

3. The Money-Getting Pitch Recipe: Ready to write up a winning pitch? Brianna advises to start with your story — why you're doing what you're doing, what problem you're solving and why you're the one to solve it. Make sure to also weave in your competitive edge, because as Brianna mentions, "You've gotta know your competition and why you're playing the game better." Next, define your target market and market opportunity, weaving in key stats to show you've done ample research. Lastly, show off any traction you've got — like news features, new hires or pending patents, etc.
