Celebrating Black Business Month with Pinterest
Written By: Team MOODEAUX
Did you know that August is National Black Business Month? More than a moment, it comprises a 20-year movement with a rich history and evolving significance.
Despite facing systemic barriers, Black entrepreneurs have been creating businesses and fostering community wealth for centuries, from free Black communities in the North before the Civil War to thriving Black Wall Streets in the early 20th century.
Below, we’ve listed some interesting and informational facts about Black Business Month’s origin and current status.
How It Began:
- Founded in 2004: Black Business Month was established in the early 2000s by historian John William Templeton and engineer Frederick E. Jordan Sr. Their goal was to highlight the vital role of Black-owned businesses in the U.S. economy and to encourage support and recognition of these businesses.
- Economic Empowerment Focus: The founders aimed to address the challenges that Black entrepreneurs face, including limited access to capital, networks and other resources. By promoting Black Business Month, they sought to foster economic empowerment and equity within the Black community.
- Why in August: The month of August was chosen deliberately to align with the broader cultural recognition of Black achievements, coinciding with other important observances like National Black Family Month. It’s the perfect time to focus on economic contributions as well as the social and cultural impact of Black entrepreneurs.
Where It Stands:
- Social Media Impact: The rise of social media has greatly amplified the celebration of Black Business Month. Hashtags like #SupportBlackBusiness and #BlackBusinessMonth have become popular, helping to highlight Black-owned businesses on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and Pinterest.
- Corporate and Community Involvement: Many corporations and community organizations now recognize Black Business Month as an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to diversity, inclusion and promoting equity — not just equality.
- Economic Contributions: Today, Black-owned businesses contribute significantly to the U.S. economy, with an estimated 3 million businesses generating over $150 billion in revenue annually. Black Business Month serves as a reminder of these contributions and the ongoing need to address disparities in the business landscape.
This year, to celebrate Black Business Month, our friends at the New Voices Foundation teamed up with Pinterest for a special shopping spotlight article. Among the brands featured include us at MOODEAUX and our latest fragrance launch: Brand New.
